This complex “machine” was created at the Doccia porcelain manufactory. Standing 167 centimeters high, it was originally designed to rotate. It was donated to the Accademia Etrusca in 1756 by Marquis Carlo Ginori, who at the time was the Academy’s Lucumone (president). The work allegorically represents the passing of power from the Medici to the Lorraine dynasty.
Beneath the fresco of the Annunciation (1633) by the Aretine painter Salvi Castellucci is displayed the numismatic collection of the Accademia Etrusca. In the side cases, visitors can admire the Academy’s collections of gems and goldwork, along with a series of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century plaster and sulfur casts. The frescoed coats of arms belong to the Della Rena and Marzi-Medici families, painted in 1656 and 1661 respectively.
