Museum
The Museum
The MAEC – Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca e della Città di Cortona is a treasure chest preserving an extraordinary collection of works from the various historical periods that have shaped the territory of Cortona, an ancient Etruscan city. The pieces on display reflect the artistic and cultural richness of one of the greatest civilizations of the ancient world, as well as the continuous evolution of artistic movements that unfolded over the centuries that followed.
Archaeological Area
The Archaeological Area of Sodo
At the foot of Cortona lies the archaeological area of the MAEC, in the area of Sodo di Cortona, where two imposing Etruscan tombs of the Archaic period stand: Tumulo I and Tumulo II of Sodo. Locally known as “meloni” for their characteristic shape, these monumental burial mounds—dating between the late 7th and 6th century BC—celebrated the prestige and power of the aristocratic families who commissioned them.
Distributed Cultural Park
The Distirbuted Cultural Park
Across the Distirbuted Cultural Park in the territory of the city of Cortona, you will find additional Etruscan and Roman funerary monuments of great archaeological interest, most of which can be visited. Through the Cultural Itineraries we propose, you can also reach and explore these monuments on foot.
